Taxing Marijuana to fund Libraries

The Los Angeles City Council has their work cut out for them, as this is the last week to approve items for the March 2011 ballot.  The municipal election where half of the City Council is up for grabs along with a number of measures.  Pension reform has been approved for the ballot and several more will be considered. Marijuana and Guns don’t mix or do they?

Out in Colorado you can use marijuana for medicinal purposes and you can also purchase firearms, but you can’t purchase both at the same time.   Due to federal and state laws there are conflicts between the two not allowing this.

Medical Marijuana grower gets plea deal

A local medical marijuana grower in Colorado announced his operation on a local broadcast news channel back in February.  Federal investigators who arrested the man are now offering him a plea deal, which would leave the man five years in a federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’ Office in Colorado.

Michelle Rainey dies from Cancer

Michelle Rainey, medical marijuana advocate, died from cancer.  She was Marc Emery’s ex-business partner and had lived with Crohn’s Disease since a teenager.  In her last years of her life she struggled against melanoma and lymphatic cancer.

Her husband Jef Tek and mother Emilie, who were by her side holding her hand when she succumbed Wednesday night, survive her.  The 39 year old was the organizational force behind Emery’s pot-based business empire although their relationship deteriorated and they split after being hit with a 2005 U.S. drug and money laundering indictment.

Tacoma will keep Marijuana dispensaries open

Eight dispensaries in Tacoma had a showdown with the city of Tacoma Tuesday after both sides called for new state Legislature to come up with a clearer plain on how medical-marijuana patients can legally access the drug if they don’t grow it themselves.

New West Marin business strives for legitimacy

With the state of California’s unemployment rate topping 12 percent and government leaders desperate for jobs and tax revenue, four West Marin entrepreneurs think they have the answer.  Their new business, Medi-Cone, employs about a dozen people in the cultivation, harvesting, and packaging of medical marijuana for several Bay Area dispensaries.

MD Ponders Medical Marijuana Law

In Annapolis, MD Sen. David Brinkley said that if re-elected he plans to introduce a bill that would legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes.  A similar bill passed the Senate during the last session, but the House version failed.  The bill would license producers, distributors, and users.  They want to provide an alternative to buying marijuana on the black market.

South Dakota Highway Patrol in a Political Ploy

The South Dakota Coalition for Compassion is crying foul about a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety regarding medical marijuana seized in traffic stops.  The coalition says the department was releasing information about a 100-pound marijuana bust in Pennington County in August only to smear their campaign for the passage of Initiated Measure 13 on Election Day.  Measure 13 would legalize medical marijuana in the state.

Tony Ryan, a retired police officer who works for the coalition, said, “The announcement by the (Highway Patrol) was self-evidently a political maneuver by bureaucrats who have a state in stopping Measure 13.”

Marijuana last option for some

There is a new Rocky Mountain poll out that finds 53 percent of Arizona voters would vote Yes on Prop 203, which would legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes only.  32 percent oppose the bill and 14 percent are undecided.  Supporters of the bill say it is more than just smoking, but its about compassion for the sick people that need it.  Prop 203 is a controversial bill on the ballot and is making news.
