Thomas F. Kelaher’s, the mayor of Toms River, grandson was arrested after he was found with marijuana inside his 2001 Ford Explorer.  Investigators from the prosecutor’s Special Operations Group were the ones that arrested Daniel Thompson when they found the marijuana in his truck.  Daniel Thompson is 20 and lives on Magnolia Lane in Toms River.

According to Deputy Chief Michael Mohel, of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office said South Toms River police pulled over the truck at 6:20 p.m. in the evening on August 13^th.  Mohel said following the stop of the vehicle there was additional marijuana believing to belong to Thompson, which was found at a friends house on River Terrace in Toms River.

Mohel went on to say, “As per protocol, we asked the state’s Division of Criminal Justice to ascertain if it is appropriate for us to prosecute at this level, and they will decide if he will be prosecuted here or at a different venue due to his familial relationship.”  We are awaiting their decision in this matter.”

Thompson is charged with possession of marijuana of more than 1 ounce, but less than 5 pounds; possession of marijuana with intent to distribute; possession of cocaine; and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Deputy Chief Mohel couldn’t say with certainty how much marijuana was allegedly seized.

Kelaher before being mayor previously served as Ocean County Prosecutor and declined any comment about the situation.

Despite connections that Thompson has he shouldn’t be treated differently than any other citizen and should face charges any normal person would face that didn’t have ties to the state.
